I'd guess they were doing some tweaking or upgrading servers and things got
fouled up and are busy chasing down the problem and it will take however
long to find who did what that should not have did that. I'd also guess,
Annie, that the passwords or user ids got lost. They will use their backups
to fix it in due time if they can't trace down the problem.

Thanks for the optimistic assessment, Bud. ;o) The last time earthlink
tweaked newsgroups it took about 10-12 days to get the service back.
But at least they still provide access, unlike other isps who've
dropped news completely. The email problems are still with me... but
time heals all, eh?

Hmm.Perhaps a nice piece of cake this afternoon will put me in a
better frame of mind (that always seems to work for you <g>))
