We always thought we were lucky if it revealed the level of literacy.

When I was working patrol we let whomever we were interviewing write
their own statement. It always made them feel better.

Of course, if you wanted to have any idea what actually happened without
needing a decoder ring and considerable time to use it, you read my
write up.

Until you've been there, it's all but unbelievable just how badly most
people write any kind of narrative, regardless of the quality of their
handwriting - or even grammar and spelling.

Sometime AFTER I had finished my report, I'd finally actually read the
assorted written statements as I attached them, just for entertainment.
I certianly never found them useful for writing the report.
