I'm glad that your "regular dentist" was willing to do that. I don't have a
"regular dentist." The person who was our dentist just before our financial
disaster hit went out of business. And there isn't any dentist that would be
willing to take us on on those terms as a regular patient. Maine has a
terrible time finding dentists that will take Medicaid patients, for
example. Even children. My son's regular dentist continued him as a patient
for a while even though he was on the state plan. Then they informed us that
they weren't scheduling any more appointments for those patients because the
state was behind in its payments. Of course, we have always seen to it that
our son had dental and health care, even though I don't.- Hide quoted text -

Well, Maine may be Oz, but I know people in four states who have
negotiated with dentists.

And I don't know ANYBODY, except David, with a dental plan. It's
certainly not provided with my medical plan, and I a very good state
of Connecticut medical plan.

I don't really understand what people want here--this would
not, yet again, be solved by any of the universal coverage medical
plans anybody has yet thought up to propose, it's not offered by most
medical benefits plans in private companies, even medical benefits
plans that are fairly generous.

And after arguing strenuously in this forum for a government
universal insurance plan, you say you had trouble with your son's
dentist because...the government medical insurance plan didn't work.

So what, exactly, is the point here?

The point is that when I lived in Soviet Russia, I did not worry about
crushing medical and dental expenses. For all the horrible things
about the place, when one got sick, the only worry on one's mind was
about getting well. My dental work (and I had plenty) was done for
free and is still functional now.

Every other civilized country except the US has managed to somehow
provide health care for its citizens so that they don't have to forgo
needed medical treatment for financial reasons. They don't have to
fight with insurance companies at a time when they should be fighting
their illness. They don't have to prove that a broken leg is not a
"preexisting condition" and fight the insurance companies for every
penny. They don't need to worry that one visit to a psychiatrist will
raise their health insurance premiums through the roof for the rest of
their lives (I read a story like that). They don't die of treatable
dental infections.

If you call this "freedom", I will respectfully disagree. I don't
want this kind of freedom. Much as I hate socialism as implemented in
Soviet Russia, I think that one of the benefits of civilization is
medical care for its citizens - even the poorest of the poor.

LM (hurt my wrist the other day... hope I can afford the treatment)
