My sister has 4 cats, all of whom showed up sequentially. The last
one came just after her oldest cat died. She lives in the woods, not
in an urban area. Her last (newest) cat was dumped - he'd been
neutered, for pete's sake. And he's such a sweetie.

That would be something like those markings hobos made on fences and trees
and such to indicate which houses would give them food or let them sleep in
the barn or give them odd jobs. Cats are ingenious enough to do that. One
claw scratch = food, two = a place to take the occasional vacation, three =
suckers live here, move on in
