I would appreciate recommendations of modern-day mysteries based in
Japan. Looking for one that delves into that country's culture and
sub-cultures. Ideally, I would like the mystery to be based in Tokyo
but any city or village is fine. Series would be most appreciated as
they tend to more fully reveal a culture.
Thanks in advance!

I rather liked "Inspector Imanishi Investigates" - my brain is
blanking out on the author's name, alas.

Yipes, I think my brain was completely malfunctioning. The author is
Seicho Matsumoto.
You can also check out Akimitsu Takagi's "The Tattoo Murder Case" (I
think he's written some other ones, but I've only read that one). I
also rather liked Janwillem van de Wetering's "Inspector Saito's Small
Satori".
