Saw the downswoop of the massive steel girders on our way out to
see friends in Berkeley; whew. Amazing. Now they're saying that
it will take a long time to fix the thing because there's a steel
shortage. Anybody heard of a steel shortage before this? There was
a concrete shortage a year or so ago that seems to have eased up, but
steel?

Its not so much the steel, but the precise tension, flexion, size and weight
of steel that's needed. Plain old jive steel can be had for general
construction purposes, but this is something special. At least that's what
they are leading us to believe. I think they're just getting more creative
about finding ways to say: Bend over.

There are different grades of steel, I work with steel all the time in my family's machine shop. Construction grades and
the type used for freeway over passes are different and has to be specially made. Plain old steel won't work.
We had an over pass a few miles from here where the steel was marginal and an entire section fell through and almost
killed d a few people who narrowly missed the hole.
And there is a steel shortage right now. Prices are getting higher and higher, due in large part to the demand in China.
No conspiracies here.
