Speaking of phrases and words that are over-used, I was thinking of starting
a new thread but hadn't gotten around to it. The reason for it is, I'm reading "Endangered Species" by Nevada Barr and twice now I've come across duplicate uses of a word or phrase in close proximity. I don't know how to describe it exactly, but here's one example: The word "ubiquitous" was in two sentences, on facing pages. That is a distraction to me, and something I'd think an editor would discourage. I certainly try to avoid it in my own writing (emails and such, not "real" writing) because, although it may be natural in speech, it doesn't read smoothly.

A few weeks back my sister lend me a pile of books. I had asked her for some Agatha Christie books as I don't remember much from reading them thrity or so years ago. Among the books she gave me were three Christie books and in all three of them I found the phrase, "You could have knocked me over with a feather." The phrase stuck out because for some reason Jack and I had been chuckling over the phrase shortly before I started the first book.
