Medical science was not very advanced - my father was a doctor who made
house calls, not many people came into the office. Everything he needed
(and had) went into his black bag. There was a lot of mumbo-jumbo --
the paternal doctor figure who gave placebos and was grateful when they
worked. Tuberculosis was treated with sun bathing.
Heinlein had TB and used the treatment, which involved collapsing
a lung, as the basis of a story. The treatment wasn't risk free and the
doc in the story has a bad day, killing two patients in a row, leading to
some reluctance to be number three....
My father had TB and spent 6 months virtually immobile in a Veterans'
hospital and several years thereafter recovering. He was fortunate
that sulpha drugs had arrived on the scene.
ISTR the treatment had very unpleasant side-effects on him and he ended
up discontinuing the treatment.
