Re: 2006 B'Con roll call - Who's going to Madison?

Just so no one is unclear on what went before,

Well, Lynn allen, it's nice of you to quote the entire exchange, "so no
one is unclear on what went before," but, oh, wait, you DIDN"T quote
the entire exchange, did you? In fact, you left out my first post, to
which Jon responded. Since you forgot, I'll quote my post here,

"I know. I don't really take part on Bouchercon "business" (meaning I
don't go to panels to discuss where it should be held or volunteer to
help). So I'm not going to do too much complaining...it's kind of like
not voting then complaining about politicians.

But I have to say: Wisconsin and Alaska back to back? Seriously
people, these are OUT OF THE WAY places. I understand that conventions
want to embrace a large geographical area, and I totally agree with the
idea that conventions should not be held ONLY in large cities...but I'm
afraid if you hold a yearly convention in an out of the way place too
often, you're going to end up losing attendees and potential fans. It
just doesn't help to grow the genre."

Then we move on to the exchange you quote:

This is what Jon said:

Madison is not really out of the way. Most people have to change planes
once. Big deal we had to do it for Austin too. Monterey was a real
hassle to get to, and it was a great convention. The nearest airport was
an hour away.

Where are you located that this is such a hardship for you?

Plus if no ones puts in a bid to do Bouchercon, it's going to go where
people are willing to do the three years worth of work to put one on.

You don't know much about how Bouchercon is put on or what goes into
doing one, so maybe you should do a little homework before you start
complaining.

Jon

Nothing rude I can see, though he does suggest you are unfamiliar with
the realities of convention organization.

Nothing rude? After reading my first post in which I already mention
that I don't know much about convention organizing and therefore am not
going to make a bunch of complaints? Nothing rude? After I simply
mentioned that I thought holding conventions in out of the way places
back to back wasn't a good idea? It's rude and condescending.

Chill out Jon - bitchy much? Maybe you should have a drink and try to
calm down a little. As I ALREADY NOTED in my post above, I don't take
part in the business of Bouchercon so I'm not going to complain much.
My CONCERN is that I think holding conventions back to back in small
out of the way places is not a great idea for a major annual
convention. Madison is 85th largest city; Anchorage, I think, is
around #80.

Okay..you call him bitchy, tell him to go have a drink and calm down.
The implication is that *he* was upset. Which his words do not convey,
btw. But your phrasing sure does.

More from you:

Now I'll go and do my homework, daddy, and get a list of complaints
together. When it's ready, I'll be sure to let you know.

A dismissive and insulting little paragraph, no? Rude on the face of
it, for rudeness' sake, since it conveys no actual useful information.

You are correct. I responded rudely to a rude post.

And from Jon again:

As I noted, if there are no bids, there will be no convention, if there
is only one
bid, that's where the convention will be held.

By the way, as a recovering alcoholic I love being told to have a drink.
You rock.
Jon

"You rock." Is that the "attack" perpetrated against you?

Um, no, it wasn't. You're one post behind. Maybe if you'd actually
started with my first post, instead of starting with Jon's response,
you'd know that.

Perhaps
you're having a very bad day, and blowing things out of proportion.
There wasn't any attack. You were the one who was rude, not Jon.

When everyone tells you that you've got egg on your face, don't waste
time protesting you've never had egg on you before, and besides, it's
the egg's fault. Look for a napkin.

Lymaree
who does not, categorically, "jump all over" people.

You think you're right; I think I'm right. Oh well.
