What I've learned so far is that I need to learn the ASL alphabet. The
book came with a CD which will give me visuals on my computer screen, so I
can practice. If anyone on RAM is interested, I can report back on my

I took a sign class years ago, but have lost most of it because I never
had the chance to use it. I'd be interested to know if the CD you are
using is helpful!
I had a deaf roommate/neighbor for a while and at one point I
had about 250 signs in my vocabulary. It was a lot of fun learning
and Jimmy was an extraordinary teacher. He would remember who
knew what signs and who didn't and explain a new sign.
About the coolest thing you could do is ask what their names are
in sign; trust me that they would be very flattered and thrilled.
