Yes, and in Australia all amendments to the Constitution must be put
to a public referendum with all adult citizens required to vote. It
must get a majority of votes in the country as a whole, and a majority
in 4 out of the 6 states.

There was a proposal to amend the Constitution to include freedom of
religion. IIRC, it was in 1989 and was defeated in every state. As I
remember, one of the arguments against it was the way US courts
handled your amendment.

You and Jane are doing a good job of convincing me that we should not
have anything corresponding to the first amendment in our
Constitution.

Mique may remember the referendum better. We do not have a bill of
rights and there were 4 amendments submitted. All 4 lost.
