| And it was made into a really good movie by John Huston--his last, I
| believe. His daughter Angelica is in it, as well as a slew of wonderful

The film 'The Dead' was a very fine adaptation. I've looked to rent it, with
no luck, but may end up buying the dvd, if there's one. About two years ago,
we saw the most wonderful theater performance of The Dead -- a *musical
adaptation* at the Court Theater (in Chicago's Hyde Pk). Wasn't sure that
would work for us, but it did! I think Dubliners, and the stories therein,
is by far the most accessible of Joyce's writing.

On one of our very first dates in 1967, my now husband took me to see
"Ulysses" -- the movie! (We most likely went to see it because we'd heard it
had been 'banned' in Ireland. But why censored? Well, I suppose, because
Bloom reads pornography, visits bordellos, etc. So it sounded like the
perfect date film. nudge, nudge. It was either that or a DH Lawrence film,
iirc.;) Anyway, my clever lad had just aced his uni lit courses, imcluding
Joyce, and may have wanted to show off :).

Now that I think back, that could have easily been our last date. Heh.. But
fortunately, we both found Ulysses overly long and pretty tedious and were
sitting in the only seats left, in the first row, leaning way back to see
the screen. Wjy is this so memorable? Because the projectionist mixed up the
reels, and hardly anyone'd noticed! That was a classic evening.. <g>

I'd be interested to see Ulysses now, and with a more adult perspective, I
might actually like it :)
