| Yes. The ears can get attuned to unfamiliar accents surprisingly
quickly.
In
| the movie "Kes" there was a warning in the opening credits that some may
| find trouble understanding the heavy accents but to stick with it and
after
| a while it would start to make sense.
|
| The funniest thing about accents is in "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking
| Barrels".- Americans liked the movie but had trouble understanding the
| Cockney dialogue -So what do the producers do? - They hire a big
American
| star (Brad Pitt) for their next production and have him speak such
gibberish
| throughout that even other people in the movie couldn't understand him.-
| (Apparently that was Brad Pitt's idea).

Oh and come to think of it, Trainspotting was a film and book for which
many
on both sides of the 'pond' probably could have used an interpreter,
though
most everything was fairly clear from the context. Since Irvine Welsh
wrote
this in dialect, it was easier to read the 'hard to get' passages aloud
for
me. Have heard that even some Scots readers/viewers found it tough
rowing..
But it was certainly worth the effort.

I understand some French people had trouble with the Parisian underworld
slang of "Rififi".
