Ear piercing, even in small children, is one thing.
Foot-binding, for example, begun when girls are too young to choose,
is another.
Yup.
I'm on the edge regarding things like the African tribe whose women
wear those neck-extending rings that finally separate the vertabrae
and make them look like giraffes...clearly those are chosen as adults
(since they don't begin until marriage), but they also do permanent
damage that restricts lives and if removed, can be fatal.

I didn't realize it had that effect. [shudder] It's hard for me to imagine
how these things get started.
On the other hand, I still can't understand why people get tattoos, and I
didn't pierce my ears until I was 30. Clearly, I'm a wuss.
