And a proper, classic, historical, geek worked in a freak show biting the
heads off live chickens for the entertainment of the less geeky...

So, presumably, at some point, the jocks decided that competence in anything
not involving grown men wrestling over a ball in a muddy field was akin to
chicken decapitating, and transfered the term of abuse.
