What the heck happened to Benton? <SPOILERS & REQUEST FOR SPOILERS>

I just joined this newsgroup. Hope it's okay to ask this type of question.

I've read most of Patricia Cornwell's Scarpetta series. Around _Black Notice_ things got too depressing for me, so I bailed. But last week I borrowed the audio tapes of _Blow Fly_, just to try it again. Not sure how many books I've missed, but this one starts off with Benton alive and in hiding!!!!! Some dialog has suggested that he faked his death with the help of whatisname the sloppy detective and Scarpetta's niece. And it's hinted that he did this because he was gay!!! and to protect Scarpetta somehow.

What the F........?

What the heck did I miss? Could someone give me a pithy paragraph or two to fill me in?
