My dentist says he invented a technique, by accident really, of setting
a sort of buzzing instrument against the cheek when giving a shot of
novocain, which in my experience renders the shot nearly imperceptible.
He thinks it works just by distracting the patient enough to offset the
discomfort of the shot.

I speak as someone who has a pretty okay body, but one with an
inordinate sensitivity to pain or even discomfort which is a royal pain
in the butt, as it were. Novocain is my friend, without which there
wouldn't be a tooth left my my head by this time!
