This is because you're using the horrible Google interface. Most of that
spam is originating from Google, and most sites dump it before anyone
outside of Google ever sees it. I see a spam message maybe once every
couple months here.
Does Usenet allow people to
edit their own post, attach photos, or block spam entirely like
today's latest forum programs?
1. Once a post is submitted, it goes to thousands of servers around the
world. You cannot call it back. You _can_ issue a cancel message
which goes off to all those servers and tells them to discard the
message, but many sites will not honor cancels today. This is a _good_
thing.
2. You cannot post photos to discussion groups. You can post photos to
binary groups, and there are some newsreaders that will automatically
do that for you. This means that servers that only have limited
bandwidth and disk space can decide not to carry binary groups, while
servers that have plenty can carry them. This is a good or a bad
thing depending on how you look at it.
3. The ability to block spam and/or any other kind of post is far more
powerful with typical Usenet clients than with any of the web forums.
The killfile abilities of a typical newsreader allow you to kill or
select threads, subjects, posters, etc. I can set my client to dump
all postings from Google or from Penn State, or to dump all postings
from Earthlink except for a particular user. I can dump all postings
with "Auricon" in the subject, etc. This is an amazing and wonderful
thing. The horrible Google Groups interface does not allow you to do
this, however.
