In Sydney Australia we may have the world's largest cinema screen -
the Imax in Darling Harbour - but the full size Imax screen is rarely
used. Most Imax films are in 3-D which make the huge screen shrink
by a third. Some feature films in Imax (rarely seen in our local
Imax) shrink the screen even further so that we are seeing only a
third of the full screen. Even worse is that the 3-D feature FLY ME TO
THE MOON (89 mins) was only shown as a 50 min short in Imax
here.People are being ripped off as the Cinema still advertises the
screen as the biggest in the world but it rarely utilises the screen
to it's full capacity. Our second newly opened digital Imax cinema
has a screen not much bigger than your local Multiplex.Does this
mean that IMAX screens of the future will only be mini screens
compared with the old days of 70mm imax film projection. It seems today
that you can call a digital cinema "IMAX" despite it bearing no
relation to IMAX. Like "the Incredible Shrinking Man", I can forsee
the eventual Imax screens shrinking until they too disappear..
I've never been an IMAX fan and now there seems less reason. Just how
many elephants high are these new screens?

I agree with Marty about Imax. The ones at zoos like to advertise as
being so many giraffes high and elephants wide. Personally I have
never seen 14 giraffes stacked on each other or 12 elephants end to
end, can think of no reason I would like to see same and certainly
don't feel cheated that I haven't. I also don't see the advantage of
showing widescreen movies on screens that in most cases are taller
than wide.

Wait till you get a load of the "imax" screens being put into the AMC
plexes... it's not Imax, it's MINI-Max! working on a story about that
as a followup to the coverage of the 3D summit.
