Brother Josiah chiming in here:
I still recall fondly the recording sessions with Mr. Pollack @ A&R
Studios in NYC when Dave recorded the initial TriStar
horse-galloping-through-the-haze-logo theme music.
There were four choices. The orchestra played all four. Dave asked:
"Which one do you like, Sydney."
"Number two is nice."
And that's basically how it went down.
It was in 1983 and I actually turned down an invite from a publicist
friend that night to go RCMH to see the Ron Haver restoration "A Star Is
Born" playing double system with an IB print.
Oh, and apropos of everything:
I'm a daddy -- in stereo!
One daughter; one son. Born Friday May 30 in NYC.
Breathing slowly into a paper bag,
Josiah

Hard to believe I did that work 25 years ago (gasp!) at Boston
University.
My professors wanted me to get it published. We talked to a couple of
houses, but no one was really interested. Then again, at that time
there was no larger public awareness of such things so no one was
clamoring for a tome like this. But now with the advent of 16x9 HDTV,
routine letterboxing on TCM and others, and dare I say it - the shrine
that Marty Hart has built, times are considerably different. So while I
may have been a lone albeit knowledgeable voice in that wilderness then,
there are far better and more thorough works out there now (especially
on the interwebs).
But having Polllack's comments in the work enhanced the thesis - much to
the dismay of my classmates who didn't have similar ringers in their
works.
AND - my introduction to Pollack came through the composer (and frequent
Pollack collaborator) Dave Grusin. My twin brother Josiah (who you know
from his posts here as well) was at the time the chief engineer and
technical director at Dave's record label - GRP Records. Pollack was
amazed that someone was even interested in the subject, let alone
interested in speaking with him about it, so he was very happy to share
his thoughts.
