My point was that for most DVD's (which are CSS encoded), defeating Macrovision wasn't going to get you a digital copy of the DVD.

First, you remove CSS.

THEN, you remove Macrovision.

Or, you can do both in one apparent pass, seemingly simultaneously.

Most "ripping" tools allow you to do this ... even those ripping tools which are employed by licensees such as PBS stations.

As a practical matter, removing CSS, which is possible by itself, yet leaving Macrovision, which is also possible, does not accomplish much.

If you remove CSS, you might as well remove Macrovision, as well.

What's this have to do with your original post?? (below)

>I have, but no longer use, a player which has an additional secret >sequence which disables Macrovision, thereby allowing both playing any >region DVDs _and_ making copies of same.

You were talking about how your DVD player could bypass Macrovision. I pointed out that this only allows you to output an ANALOG copy of the DVD to VHS or DVD recorder. You won't get a pure Digital copy this way.

Now you're talking about ripping tools for a computer. That will allow you to get a digital copy because software can strip both CSS & Macrovision from the DVD. This doesn't invalidate what I said in my original reply.
