Hmmmmm! This comes down to a comparision between digital and
analogue in the long-run. Analogue sound is, of course, free --
despite tape hiss -- of the harsh sound usually associated with
digital playback. Personally, I would prefer magnetic playback
to any digital cinema format. I understand from working on sound
recordings in the studio that 24-bit/96-kHz playback offers an
improved resolution to the 16-bit Philips Red Book standard for
audio CD.
There is good digital and there is bad digital. However I don't
find hiss the main problem >for me< in analog tape, as it's a
constant like a background air-conditioner running. Since it never
changes you don't notice it so much.
What drives me up the wall is modulation noise from poorly aligned
machines, distortion from being over driven, and in so many things
the residual wow and flutter, and in some transfers even having the
speed off.
There is, of course, the Super Audio CD [SACD], which incorporates a
waveform in lieu of the digital PCM digits. But, then, I doubt that we
will never see any sort of SACD recording, mastering or playback used
for films
And for older films I find noise-gates and limiters cranked up
during broadcast is just painful. Thankfully a lot of that has
gone by the way, but there are still some places that crank it to
the max.
