Re: 2001 on DVD

here's my opinion - the DVD is just fine with the
exception of one scene.

Dear people,

So I finally have to participate in this disussion.

There are a number of things that always have bothered me in this transfer (hopefully the region 1 by Warners is the same as my region 2 version, which is what I am talking about). I watched it many times now on a CRT projector and here is my list (I have seen the 70mm restoration too, in Cinerama, to know how the director intended it):

First of all, there is too much edge enhancement. It just doesn't look sharp when projected - there are telltale double edges all around - and no it's not my setup.

Then there's this jump of frame line for one frame only right in the exciting middle of the docking sequence. I think it's at the beginning of the last shot, and yes, it's really annoying (it makes the space station look like shaken by an earthquake for a second, right in the middle of this floating sequence)!

In the stargate sequence there's a shot where colors look misaligned somehow - I am not sure if the shot was there during projection of the restored 70mm print I saw.

All the way through slow motion shots in the final segment you can see the blacks bumping. I acknowledge the fact that this might have to do with my setup's gamma correction amplifying this imperfection in the transfer...

Worst of all: Due to changes in contrast for this transfer to the world of vdeo the front projection screen's patchwork of stripes of reflective material during the 'Dawn of Man' sequence are painfully visible - the brightness e.g. contrast of the sky in comparison to the rest of the image should cover that up nicely - and it does: I never noticed this in theatrical projections, it's simply a perfect illusion (a similar thing involving perfect matte painting magic unfortunately happened to me with just one shot on the DVD of 'The Empire Strikes Back')!

I might have posted something similar in the past, I'm not sure.

Hope this adds to the mystery of the missing perfect transfer of '2001'!

One last comment: In light of these 'scars' I find compression artefacts (which tend to be invisible on my setup anyway) objectionable.

Maybe you could comment on my observations...

Thanks,
Martin
