I read it that Steve was saying that once a CF card has been formatted FAT32
by the Fusion (in the FAT32 Fusion slot) it cannot then be re-formatted by
the Fusion (in the MARF slot) for use as a MARF compact flash, I've never
tried it but it would be strange if true, meaning that formatting a CF as
MARF in the MARF slot had some kind of limitation in not being able to wipe
the slate clean with an otherwise functioning card? One possibility could be
that the card is damaged in some way?

You are confusing ZAX file format with MARF Disk format. Both are
propriatary formats of Zaxcom. The non-FAT32 slot on a Fusion is a MARF
slot. MARF is a file Disk operating system that is propriatary and
unique to Zaxcom DEVA machines. ZAX is a compressed audio FILE format
developed by Zaxcom. Kind of like FLAC (maybe exactly like FLAC) file
format. a ZAX file can be stored on any FAT or FAT32 formated disk drive
or CF card.
CF cards for the MARF slot must be formated by the DEVA in that slot. Do
not interchange them.

The fusion has two slots for cf cards. Top foe .zax, bottom for FAT32.
If I format a cf card for FAT 32 and then try to reuse the card by
reformatting in the .zax slot, the card will not format and accept
recording. That card now can only be used for FAT 32. I have tried to
reformat so I can reuse them in the zax slot with no luck.

Formatting a drive means giving it a new file system: which is a way
of organizing files on a drive (reformatting 'deletes' files by
overwriting the database that references them). The .zax format is a
type of sound file, independent of the filesystem. According to the
Deva 16 manual, the Deva formats a hard drive with FAT32. What exactly
is the problem you're having?
