Re: Tascam HD-P2 Timecode Question

BWF indicates that they have a bext (broadcast Wav Extension) chunk which
contains the time code and some metadata. (HD-P2 puts in minimal or no
metadata).. All Broadcast Wave files are also WAV files. The file
extension should be .wav for both types. So you can't tell if they are
broadcast wave files without a utility that reads all the extra chunks in
the file and determines if there is time code. They look the same and play
the same as WAV files. Older recorders used to use the .BWF filename
extension which was improper. The Broadcast Wav standard states that the
filename extension should be .WAV since they are a superset of the RIFF Wav
format.

I recorded some dialogue on the HD-P2 which was jam- synced to
timecode with a Aaton Option C timecode generater.

The files were conformed with the HD-P2 software on location and
handed off to the director.

When the director drops these files in different audio software
programs the timecode is not being recognized. He feels that the
timecode is not there.

He has tried dropping the files in Nuendo, Vegas and Audition.

On Vegas if you "drop" the files in you will not get timecode and they
will
appear as normal wav files. You need to go to the FILE menu then IMPORT
then select BROADCAST WAVE to import them into an existing timeline with
timecode. If you import them into a new program then a timeline will be
created that matches the length of the file being imported.

Can't speak for Nuendo or Audition, but it's most decided NOT drag and
drop
for Vegas.

I think what is puzzling me most right now is why these files are
showing up as WAV rather than BFW when I look at them in BWF Widget.
Should they not be BWF. Tascam clearly states that they generate BWF
so why are these not BWF?

I will look at Vegas. I am not sure if the director just dropped the
files or imported them. I will speak with him tomorrow.
Thanks again
Bob
