Out of eleven postings on this mornings Ramps only two are sound
related. The rest are clothing adverts. How has the site been hijacked
in this way?

It has been going on for years. Using a real Usenet news
server (NNTP) and a newsreader client on your computer
will filter out most of this spam. The decent news servers
filter out much of it, and you can configure your newsreader
to filter out the rest. For example, I haven't seen ANY of the
spam you reporting.

You appear to be reading this newsgroup on Google Groups
which not only has no spam filtering, but is actually the SOURCE
of most of the spam.

Furthermore, if you are only seeing two postings on-topic, then
Google is *losing* most of the desirable content as well. By my
count there were ~26 messages yesterday, and 17 so far today.
My recent tests of Google Groups revealed that they seem to be
missing a lot of traffic. Or at least they are unable to produce it
when searched for.
