There are more components coupled directly to the top panel than the bottom panel. If you are brave and open the top panel (not recommended, btw) you can feel the heat coming off the A/D converter and preamp chips mounted on the top pc board. Because volumetrically the 788T is challenged, the coupling to the panels is used to sink that heat. If we could find magic A/D converters with nearly the measure of performance which don't generate as much heat, we would certainly use them. We could have also made the unit a bit larger, but we didn't want to limit its portability. Kits are already huge.

Jon,
Assuming vertical position in sound bag, if you had to ventilate only one surface, would you recommend the bottom or the top? Which surface is a bigger heatsink in that orientation?
