Re: How important is it to be all DC powered on set?

It's been a while since I can remember waiting around
very long for power to come to the set. 90% of the sets need lights,
and nothing's going to happen before those lights come up anyway, so
one is rarely in a situation where people are ready to shoot and
there's no power available for you.
Well, it happens here. We move to next location and camera truck (w/
sound eqpm) get there first.
Using DC let me start mirroring or whatever I need to do while lights/
camera are setup and be completely attentive on set.
"I don't find many locations without AC, but sometimes running your
own extension lead is time consuming and tedious."
Completely agree
As for time to plug in and weight etc, a 25' single AC cable doesn't
weigh all that much, and here the electrics will usually bring you
power directly if you don't want to carry your own.
Here, they won't "usually bring you" anything! =:)
OK they have lots of AC cables on their truck but I don't usually had
the time to go there and get it... and in some critical moments this
was stressing.
Plus, I continuosly fight for reducing my equipment load/size. We
often move in small units for a while off the main set and that
approach let me move faster and effortless...

Completely agree.
Anyway, I preffer to be ligther and with a smaller footprint (sound
cart) and be free of any cable. And Li-Ion NP-1 help a lot to achieve
that.
One downside to using NP1 batteries is that you've always got to be on
top of charging batteries (which require power as well). Also, this
guy's talking about running a Yamaha mixer, a Sound Devices recorder,
and all the rest of what we need (IFB transmitter, a bunch of
wireless, monitors, computer, etc etc) on his cart. An NP1 is not
going to run all that gear for very long.
OK in that case.
I just won't shoot using a computer and/or an AC mixer, too bulky/big/
fragile for me to start with.
With just the recorder (Deva in my case but same for the 788T) you can
also organize the audio sends, etc.
But well, that is my minimum footprint/weight approach...
