I agree that the main reason to DC power your rig is to guard against
kickouts. I am often recording on a computer setup, so kickouts are
no joke re: re booting and getting rolling again. There is almost
always AC these days (esp for HD video shoots), but the kickout
problems remain. Also, especially on video shoots, it is nice to be
floated re the AC ground--fewer problems w/ ground loops w/ AC powered
video gear if your stuff is running on DC. There is also the issue of
quickie setups where the generator or tie-in won't be done. There is
no reason you can't use your PT system for location recording, the
reason people like me avoid it for location work is that it is running
a huge amount of graphics overhead to draw the waveforms etc.. Apps
like Metacorder and Boom Recorder are designed to go into record and
stay there no matter what else the computer is doing--with PT this
will be an issue for you sooner or later. With PT you need Digi
hardware, which isn't really well-designed for location use--most
interfaces we use are small rack mounted boxes--a Digi 003 is much
larger, has only 4 mic pres and only runs on AC. I would be very
careful about getting into fooling around with NR and post production
EQ on the set. First, usually there is no time for it, second, you
are making decisions in the field that are better made by people
(perhaps you) in a calibrated environment with the project cut
together. ADAT is kind of a dead format, and was never in common use
in film and video audio work. I'd recommend getting your computer rig
together, whatever the app is, and maybe some kind of smaller hardware
recorder as backup and for run-around or car-rig work.
