Re: Mac / DVD-RAM / FAT 32 Question

Leopard is okay for reading the DVD-RAM disks out of my DV824. I'll check
tomorrow on the disks from my SD744T.

My Macbook will not format or write to DVD-RAM disks even though the "super"
drive has the ability to do so according to what I read on the Panasonic
site. I was considering replacing the drive with the UJ-85J that I and SD
use in our outboard drives. I call the Apple Store to start the process and
was told (and this was later confirmed by Apple) that Apple has nothing in
place to write or format DVD-RAM disks and has no plans to implement this
function.

So the next thing I discovered is that the outboard drive, when being
controlled by a Macbook won't format or write to DVD-RAM either.

I finally figured out that by using Toast Titanium 9, I could format disks
and write to them but it's quite a goat-screw and not very elegant in it's
execution. Gotta say, my PC doesn't have any trouble with DVD-RAM disks
since I replaced the drive that came in it with a Panasonic UJ-85J. Went
right in and started to work.

Also gotta say that since I bought a Mac, there are good things about it and
things I really like about it, (Boom Recorder) and there are things about it
that absolutely drive me batty. The thing that makes me the craziest is the
attitude from Apple that there is only one way of doing things and that we
are all too damned dumb to be able to decide that we want a stupid machine
to do something different that it came from the factory able to do. PC
users have been able to customize our boxes for years to great success.
Reminds me of the mindset of some folks who extol the virtues of Apple to
the exclusion of all others. Made for each other, I'd say.

Just another tool for me, all he good and the bad. Same with a PC. Same
with a Schoeps or a Fostex. There is no one-and-only.

BTW, I run Bootcamp and Parallels on the Mac for those cool apps that are PC
only. (Still won't format a DVD-RAM<g>).

Anyone else notice this? My Mac Mini (an Intel, Duo Core) recently
stopped reading Fat 32 formatted DVD/RAM disks from my Deva. It reads
UDF formatted DVD/RAM with no problem, but it never used to have a
problem with Fat 32 disks. My guess is that a major Mac OS 10.4.10
upgrade in April omitted Fat 32 DVD/RAM drivers. If so this can be a
major problem as more and more machines update their software and lose
a capability they previously had. Of course it can also be a bug in
my particular MacMini. My next step is to re-install the original OS
(Mac, unfortunatley, does not have the Windows capability to 'restore'
to a previous state). I've heard, but no one can confirm, that Mac
Leopard has DVD/RAM capability but it's unknown if this includes Fat
32.
Anyone?
Thanks,

Leopard seems okay with DVD-RAM, but my new MacBook Pro comes with a
cheesy drive that doesn't support the DVD-RAM format for reading or
writing. I'm sure an external drive will work fine but I haven't
needed it yet.

I have no experience with this program, not using DVD-RAM but many
Cantar users on the Mac platform use " WriteUDF!" ,
which is published by Software Architects:

As with any utility, there must be some shortcomings. Someone using
this program should chime in and give their experiences so that you
can judge whether to spend the money on the program or not. Some
vertical market Apple dealers will swap out the laptop optical drive
to give you DVD-RAM capabilities when you order your laptop. It's in
these cases that you have to look beyond the bottom line price and pay
the minor amount more to deal with a specialty dealer and get the
proper solution for you. The name "superdrive" is a misnomer, and I
am surprised there isn't a class action suit against Apple for the way
they portray the drive as being able to do everything.
