but wouldn't that principle hold true for the B20 as well?
the rear ports are similarly not crowded in it's cage design,
eager to compare again in a good environment,

When I had mine originally as a demo unit, I asked about the difference. As I recall, the B5D (D for Decca) was originally a special order for Decca records. The thought being that the cage would lift the material from the rear ports of the mic and that not crowding the ports would maintain the capsule's tight pattern.
I thought that might be hooey until I compared the two. It was not.
