Re: Lectrosonics SR Reciever - First Impressions

Hi Tom and Rob,
Early Disclaimer: I understand our side of the gear. I'm not on as
firm a ground when speaking of all the various cameras out there.
Comments welcome, of course.

As far as I know, line level on the cameras is based somewhere around
0 dBu with 20 dB of headroom, that is, before maximum level is reached
or digital FS is reached. So the line level input is really a +20 dBu
input to get to full scale. The SR maximum output is just what it says
on the screen. When displaying +5 on the LCD, the output is +5 dBu at
full modulation. Full modulation is with both transmitter red LEDs
displaying.

This is 15 dB less than the +20 dBu maximum line level of the cameras.
However, this is similar to what our other receivers have put out as
maximum level. There is no headroom in the output. It can never put
out more than +5 dBu.

If the transmitter is set up, as too many people do, with low
modulation, the output levels will be even less. For instance, if the
user sets up the transmitter so that only the first green light (-20)
comes on, in a well meaning attempt to prevent overload, the maximum
output from the receiver will never get above -15 dBm. This will be
much too low for a camera line level output. You are now down 35 dB
from the +20 line input. This is the same as for any of our receivers.
You do not need to dial in headroom in the transmitters. Let the very
good limiter protect the audio path. Get those red LEDs lit, at least
occasionally

What was your gainstaging like? Line level output going from the 442
into the UM400, and mic level out from the SR into the camera? What
did you need to set the output at on the SR to get a comfortable
level?

When I looked at a demo model, I thought the output from the SR was
too low at line level, but I really only had about 5 minutes to look
at it, so just curious.
