I don't know if this is a firmware issue or ? but the RED is supposed
to offer audio recording at 24bit/48K and if you are only getting
16bit then it seems as though they have not fully opened the firmware
for that currently advertised feature.

I think if you read carefully the Sound Devices notes say that given the results of their testing the Red Camera achieves the sonic equivalent of 14.8 - 15.8 bits. Has nothing to do with the spec of the codec, only the actual sonic results.
You can put a half gallon of water into a one gallon bucket but you still have half a gallon!
