Hello,

I'm a doco guy in Ireland and am looking to expand my kit a bit. I
currently use a SD 702 but occasionally work in drama and when I do,
the 702 just isn't enough and renting any audio equipment here is a
joke so I'm in a purchasing mood.

The three recorders that are on my list are the Fostex PD606, The HHB
Portadrive and, budget permitting, the Cantar X2. From what I've read
over the last while, the Cantar seems to the best thing on the market
at the moment but I'm just wondering if there are any user reviews
from anyone here who may have used either the Fostex or HHB models and
what you may have to say about them.

I tend to be bag based all of the time (PEGZ-2) so that'll be a big
consideration in what I end up with.

Thanks very much,

Damien Looney

You should send a email to Mike Westgate as he loves the HHB
Portadrive http://www.mikewestgatesound.co.nz/ he lurks here but will
always answer a email.

The user groups (this one and http://www.jwsound.net/SMF/index.php)
haven't heard from any PD606 users as of yet, but if you don't want to
spend a lot and have everything in one box it is a very good value.

If you are looking for rugged then Cantar X2 is your machine. They
have added a lot of features in the second generation and made it
upgradeable for 1st gen owners. Check out the new info
http://www.aaton.com/products/sound/cantar/specs.php

You can join the user groups of all 3 of these machines and ask any
questions you may have and read the history of their progress.

As for me I started with a 442/744T and tested all of the machines and
chose the Cantar.

you can check out my blog for more info web.mac.com/farroutpro

good luck
