Re: 744T for TC playback with FCP file

Robert,
Don't think FCP can create BWF files although the latest version can read
them. Also I haven't checked the latest version of the firmware, but
previous versions of the 744t would not playback time code from BWF files
created on other devices  It looked at the first character of the bext chunk
and if it wasn't an 's' then it just interpreted it as a wav file and
ignored the metadata including time code. That bug may have been fixed in
the latest version though.

You are better off playing back off a laptop than the 744t.   You can't cue
the 744t very well and putting beeps or picking up at any place other than
the top of the file is almost impossible.

Also if your file came directly off a Mac and onto a CF card or other Mac
drive it may have the Mac resource fork on the file making it unreadable on
the 744t. or it could have a quick-time wrapper on the file which would also
make it unrecognizable on anything but a Mac.

A friend of mine is trying to make a .WAV file in FCP with time code
for a music video-type application.

He sent me a .wav file with TC from FCP, file which played on my MAC
but not on my 744T.  The 744T sees the file exists on the CF card,
including the .wav extension, but says it is an "unrecognizable file
format".  He sent me a new file, which played fine, but no time code.
I think that it is a Quicktime .wav file and not a broadcast .wav
file.  I know he can put the TC onto an additional audio track, and I
can output that to my Comtek Tx and to the Rx on the slate, but we
want to know how to make a file with time code that the SD744T will
read.

I called SD, and they are looking into it.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Sound Devices 744T firmware revision 2.40 provides the following key
fixes and features:

fix - time code calculation with 47952F rate, time stamp was off by
0.1%.
fix - MP2 and MP3 file length calculation
fix - possibility of missed take introduced in 2.34 with CF after
rapidly entering record after pressing stop. Unit now says "Please
Wait"
fix - project folder not setting and clearing copy flags in sub-
folders. Bug introduced in 2.34.
fix - metadata note data saving. When notes were added and then
edited, the edits occasionally did not take affect. Bug introduced in
2.34.
fix - when recording FLAC to CF, the recorder had the possibility of
producing a file of length 0 seconds.
fix - when changing from FLAC format to MP2, the unit had the
possibility of locking up.
fix - lockout of transport controls now operating properly.
change - gain display behavior when gain knobs are turned.
change - estimate of available drive space when recording FLAC format.
Original estimates too optimistic.
change - removed the 130 GB addressable space limitation. Drives up to
2 TB addressable.

Known Issues

If a single storage medium (i.e. CompactFlash card) is selected/
available for recording and it is unintentionally removed the unit
will briefly show that the volume has been taken off-line, but the
display will still indicate recording and the record LED will remain
illuminated for up to 30 seconds or until STOP is pressed.
When initiating a repair on an unformatted volume (not likely...but),
the unit will begin the process and lock up, requiring a hard shut
down.
FireWire storage volumes with a PL3507 FireWire chipset and hard drive
fail the speed test. Threre is a problem reading from these external
drives. There are no problems writing to drives of this type.
These known issues will be addressed in future revisions of firmware.
