Sony brought them by last week, and I got to play with them a little
bit. They plan to release them around NAB next spring. Pricing wasn't
exactly set, but let's just say they'll be a "premium priced" item.
The feature set was fairly impressive. They seem to have taken a lot
of user suggestions to heart. Here are a few highlights:
The DWT-B01 transmitter is pretty small (2.5"Wx2.8"Hx0.6"D) and very
lightweight (4oz w/batteries). I think the housing is made out of
magnesium. It will ship in the US in two blocks, and each will cover
approx 125 kHz. Block U3040 (TV Ch30~40) is tunable between 566~607MHz
and 615~638MHz. Block U4250 (TV Ch42~51) will cover 638~698MHz. It
features switchable Line/Mic input, adjustable attenuation, selectable
RF output (1/10/50 mW), a digital low-cut filter, and a bright OLED
display (with adjustable brightness control).
The DWR-S01D receiver is a two channel unit, with individual on/off
switched for each channel. It ships nominally as a slot-mount unit,
but an optional DWA-01D "bucket" will provide 12V DC input, Word Clock
Input (BNC), Headphone jack (w/ volume control and C1, Ch2, Ch1+Ch2
switching), and Two analog outputs (4-pin Hirose). Analog output #2
can be switched to provide 2 channels of AES audio. If Ch2 is
outputting AES, analog output #1 can still send Ch1, Ch2, or Ch1+Ch2.
Both units have a USB port (for a keyboard??) and to exchange
encryption information for the user selected "Scramble" mode.
The receiver has remote control capability over the transmitter. From
the receiver you can change the transmitter's
* Frequency setting
* RF Power
* Input Attenuation
* Low Cut Freq
* Power Mode (Sleep Mode)
When mounted in the new Sony PDW-700 XDCAM Camera, RF metadata will be
displayed in the camera's viewfinder, such as:
* Audio Input Peak level
* Battery (Tx) remaining level
* Low cut Freq
* ATT level
* Transmitter name (Transmitters can be "named" by the user)
All of this data is available on the receiver as well. The receiver
features two modes of frequency scanning:
1. Clear Scan: Automatically searches for open channels from which the
user can select
2. Active Channel: Scans for frequencies already in use so you can
check to see if there is already a unit within your block
The DWR-S01D receiver ships in two blocks: U3032 (TV Ch30~33) and
U4244 (TV Ch42~45), but can be re-tuned by a Service Technician
anywhere within the block range of the transmitters.
Sony claims the ability to run up to 12 radios within a single TV
channel without interference. They also claim 4hrs runtime @10mW with
standard AA Alkaline, but I didn't really get to test that out.
I should get a test unit in awhile to do more extended listening with.
