Well not all of us have the luxury of working 7 days a week in our
market. I enjoy doing the 2 camera, sit down, 2 booms on a stand job
as the next guy, but I work in a *** market and I do 90% eng news.
You want to talk about killing your soul, do another DEAD SOLDIER
story for one of the big 3 news networks and you'll will wish you do
reality! I get a better day rate just for labor on the reality show
than I do at home with labor and my own gear. The shooters control
the market and I'm at the mercy of what they say is an acceptable
rate, which is of course cheap!
I hate being away from my friends and family on the road but the fact
is I still have to put food in my sons belly and clothes on his back,
so if that means I have to break mine on a 12 hour day rate than so be
it. This industry has become so frustrating because all everyone does
is bitch. Bitch about the hotel, bitch about the crafty, bitch about
the rate. If you dont want to work 12 hours days and carry 2 mixers
with 9 RF's, than don't take the job.
Rob I totally agree with you as someone else who lives in a shitty
market as my girlfriend finishes college I never bitch once I take a
job. To Answer your question Charles Since I live in a smaller market
if I am working a normal day job here I am lucky to get $500 for 10
hours which is usually broken down to 350 labor and 150 for a 302, 2
lectro 416 and boom. When I travel though or work out of state for LA
or NYC based companies I get a more fair dayrate for the Swat job I
talked about above. I was getting $250.00 a day for a 302, 2 lectro
416 and boom. The company owned a Zaxcom hop so I used that. For
dayrate I was getting $400.00 for 10 and then we worked atleast 4-5
hours of overtime a day so most day I was making close to $900.00 plus
per diem which i had no time to spend. For some this may not be alot
but for me it is the job allowed me to buy some much needed gear and
build up some savings so for me it was worth the risk. I am only 25 if
I was 45 would I have done this job I dunno but for someone like me in
a smaller market anytime I can get a few week job packed full of
overtime I am going to take it.
