This actually looks like a cool little addition to have in one's kit! Anybody have any experience with it?
http://www.bswusa.com/proditem.asp?item=MICPORTPRO
Their website claims 104 dB dynamic range and minimum input level of -40 dBV, which depending on how you read it would translate to ~35 dB s/n re: -20 dBFS for a standard -50 dBu condenser mic (yuch) or possibly ~80 dB s/n (which isn't too bad, though hardly SOTA for 24 bit).
But they don't link the dynamic range and gain numbers together that I can find, so it's hard to tell.
Their THD+N is rated at .01% _for_minimum gain_, which suggests they did the dyn range at the same setting and that the preamp does contribute some noise... but again, just conjecture until somebody measures one.
Response is quoted 20 Hz - 20kHz +/- 1.5 dB, which is pretty awful at 96 kHz but certainly acceptable at 48 kHz and would never be a problem for dialog. Suggests they don't oversample or switch the filter for higher s/r. So you'd want to check aliasing if you're using it for brass and other instruments with HF components.
But mostly, BSW wants only $125 for it, and it's tiny. Which, even if it meets its minimum published spec, would certainly make it handy in the kit (USBPre it ain't, but it's not trying to be). And I'm sure the podcasters will love it.
(Anybody want to lend me one to actually measure?)
