I don't use the 442's XLR outs for wireless camera hops because I want
those XLR outs to be available for a second camera hard-line feed. I
do a lot of two camera hard wire inv's that turn into wireless hop to
camera b-roll.
That is precisely why I don't want to tie up the 442's XLR outs by
using them as camera hops, and why Sound Devices provided those TA3F
output jacks. And, that's why I love SD and the 442 specifically; lots
of configuration options.
I don't want to be disconnecting and reconnecting cables when I'm
running and gunning. I just want to be able to shed/coil the break
away hard lines and go straight to wireless hops... ideally, before
the camera man and everybody else are ready. That way, they're never
"waiting on sound" and I have more time to devote to other issues in
the shooting environment.
It's an elegant solution to the problem, as long as the levels are
correct.
