Re: 442 TA3F output question... can't get optimum gain levels into Lectro transmitters.

Hi BL,
I use TA5F's to XLRF (Line Level) That I purchased from Professional Sound Services in NYC. These are built with the proper internal padding to work with the Lectros when fed from the XLR line outputs of the 442. They have a little more padding than the cables that Lectro sells. Also I can select -10dB on the line out level of the 442 for more latitude if needed. Are you using your Lectros for a camera hop? If so, Why not use the XLR out on the 442 and make your life easy.

I have a pair of TA3F to TA5F cables, wired according to SD's website
directions, feeding a pair of UM200C's. At the 442's factory default
Line level output for the TA3F outputs, I have to turn the UM200C
transmitter gain all the way down just to be in the ballpark for
optimum gain and I'm still hot. The 0dB LED is illuminating with
program levels more often than Lectro recommends.

If I go into User Setup on the 442 and change the TA3F output to Mic
level then the opposite problem occurs: I have to crank up the UM200C
transmitters to full gain and even so, I rarely illuminate the 0dB
LED, really only on very high transients that are approaching onset of
the 442's limiters, say when peaks hit +14dB or more on the SD 442. I
have the 422 output limiters set to factory default.

I have tried using my UM400 and UM195B transmitters as well in this
config and I'm getting the same problem. According to the SD website,
if my cables are wired correctly I shouldn't have to go the these
input gain extremes on my transmitters.

I have a second pair of TA3F to TA5F cables wired the same way that
produce the same result so I don't think the cables are at fault
unless both pairs were built incorrectly.

I'd appreciate any help you guys can send my way.

Thanks
BL
