Save up just a little more for a new Sound Devices 302 or get one
used. It's a great mixer with the same great sounding pre amps as its
bigger brother 442.
As others noted, it also has more features than the other mixers in
this price range (around $1K). I would say that the gain trims alone
are with the difference in price even if the 302's pre amps weren't
superior. And, as already mentioned, the metering options are
fantastic. I usually run VU/Peak Hold and it's a great way to monitor
absolute levels and how much "oomph" is behind the signal. I can't
imagine giving up my 442's features for those of the competition.
The 302 is well worth the price difference. I've learned after buying
3 sets of gear in the last 20 years that "cheaping out" isn't worth it
in the long run. If $1000 is your upper limit, just wait a little
longer til you can buy a 302.
