I don't know if this would work for everybody . . but my advice would
be to take the most basic kit to a big city (probably either NY or
LA). There is plenty of work for us on the low levels in NY. I
assume LA is the same way, maybe more competitive. Work low-pay jobs
until you can improve your gear and your rate. Don't buy a whole
bunch of gear at the beginning when you have no resume or contacts.
Once it gets out there that you can do a good job with what you have,
your prospects increase substantially. Always choose a job with low
pay up front over some windbag who promises a big deferred payment.
Make friends with DPs, especially good DPs. Most of them are pretty
cool people who will bring you lots of work.
Best of luck on joining the fold!

I couldn't take the 9 to 5 and moved on, but everything has costs
associated with it....
you should take out a HUGE LOAN....buy every piece of gear
possible.....and then hustle forever to pay for it all before you have
to upgrade....NOT
slow and steady....build a client base and reputation for quality....
..... One of my audio mentors talked to me about how he made the
decision...he said that if he worked at another job while wanting to
be a sound guy then he was the definition of a "wanna be" sound guy.
He asked himself "Am I OK with being a wanna be sound guy?"
