Re: Heat Stroke Anyone ? I just can't take it anymore...

I did a job a few weeks ago that along with the usual foibles, was

reasons we get paid so much for doing such a mundane function in the
production chain (insert sarcastic emoticon here)... to be honest it
was the first couple of days of blowtorch heat after a couple months
of below normal temps here, I was not used to it.

To make a long story short(ish) for whatever reason after a couple
long (all) days in the heat, (drank LOTS of water) I began to feel
not only de-hydrated but became extremely irritable along with some
other symptoms. As usual I felt trapped in the "go till it gets
done" mode and went till I could not go anymore. Camera and Producer
were at each others nerves, I felt seriously ill, and, For the second
time in 20+ years, I walked.

WTF is it with "production" that they cannot understand that it is
not "worth it" to endanger peoples health with lack of rest, or
working till you drop for the "steaming pile of art" that is media
these days...Breaking news has had me up for over 35+ hours with
nothing but water... but this was a "feature" piece... This is
something I think we have all experienced and I just wonder what you
all's feelings are regarding the two freedoms we still have in the
USA... "Flying the Flag", and Saying "I Quit"

FWIW, with the news of extended heatwaves on both coasts, I hope none
of you get to experience this... Google up "heat stroke". If you are
working in 100 degree plus temps all day without being acclimated,
apparently this can cause a myriad of symptoms with the worst being
death... Take care out there, Ladies and Germs.

Cheers!

jeff,

after 1 day in contract negotiations and 2 days to prep kit before
departure.
i just went through 2 weeks of a very similar experience:

18 hours days.
as little as 5 or 6 hours between wraps and calls.
filming in dangerous environments (like lawless mining camps in
ghana).
very hot weather.
pd dropping and loosing bits of my kit.

i didn't get the call for the next shoot as there was a "personality
clash" with me and the pd/sp (same person). basically i 'answered
back' in way she didn't like when she told me i wasn't running fast
enough behind as i had stopped to check the safety of the situation -
some guy had threatened that we should not go exactly were she was
heading (and against our security men's advice). i could go on.

the best (ironic) bit though is that the show is essentially about
employment ethics (in this case gold production) and goes out on the
BBC!

frantz fanon's had a theory that colonialised countries should not
wait for independence to be granted but should seize back power
through revolution. he is saying that what is at stake is the
psychological well being of the population. to apply this to our
context; it is better to walk than not get booked again because of
grumpy reply to stupid demand. i live and learn, hopefully.
