There's nothing wrong with an FP33 if you set it up properly w/ the
recording device and listen to what you are doing. I set the limtiers
in my FP33 to +10, this worked very well. You need an external device
that can read the level of the output to do this--I have an old
LoftTech test set. Shure gives you very complete instructions on how
to do this in the manual, as well as some very useful and fairly easy
mods. I think you can download the manual from their site if you
don't have one. Their service people have been very helpful on the
phone--if you are confused call them.

Thanks Philip...that was just the info I was looking for, and coming
from you I know it is good advice! +10 it will be.

To answer previous questions, I have used an FP33 for years with great
success. I have made a number of the mods to the mixer with great
success. (peak lights, headphone volume so return matches mixer
level)

I am also about to change the low cut setting from the factory 260 Hz
(??!!) to a more usable 80 or 100 Hz setting. Yes the Sound Devices
pre amps are cleaner. The only time (in 10 years) I have had that be
a problem was while trying to record birds from several hundred yards
with a Senn 816. I switched to a Sound Devices the next day and all
was good. But in the regular world (not studio and not feature films)
very very few people (that is, other than sound recordists) will
notice the difference between the preamps of a Shure FP33 and the
Sound Devices.

As for I Dream of Weaver's problem... sounds like there are other
issues there than the mixer. Or maybe it is faulty, but there of tons
of FP33s out there doing the job every day with great success.

Thanks fellas.
