Hey asylum:
I have a Shure FP33 and am very unhappy with it, I used it for two
important recordings, and these recordings were awful. There was tons
of clipping which wasn't getting picked up when listening from
headphones to the camera, and when levels looked to be ok on the mixer
itself.

I am thinking about getting rid of it and getting another mixer or
simply recording from mic to tape. Have you had much success with this
mixer?

Hey gang, looking for some opinions/help on where to set the limiters
on my Shure FP33.
(BTW - suggestions to using/buying another mixer have already been
heard...)

I use it for corporate/industrial work and record to cameras -- either
DVCam, DV, miniDV, or good old Betacam SP. Everything from interviews,
narrations, to scripted scenes. The important thing here is that I go
to both digital and analog formats.

The question is, where to set the limiter threshold? If 0vu = -20dBfs
should I set the limiters to kick in at +10 above 0VU ( at -10dBfs)?
(seeing that broadcast standards set -10dBfs as an upper limit). Or
considering that most of my work goes to an edit bay first, should I
set it a bit higher/lower just to cover my a$$?

On the other hand, if the recording format is Beta SP, I don't want to
go higher than 12dB above 0VU since that's when tape saturation/
distortion starts to kick in.

I believe the Shure Limiters actually have a 40:1 ratio to them.

All that considered, what do you do? and what would you suggest?

thanks
