That's the list from Eric. A very good compilation of information.
The count off thing is something we started a year or two ago with
Modern. I do it all the time now. It allows the machine operator to
listen to you read the code directly off your machine. If it isn't
the same code he is seeing, something is wrong in the set up. It's an
immediate way to see drift and sync issues. I do it right after the
Date and DVD number, just count off about 30 seconds of code.
Even when the DV-40 is set to video sync, any number of things can be
set wrong on the front panel. This is a quick and easy safety check
to make sure we don't get the call.

Please send me an e-mail to let me know you received this ok.
The Audio Post house may have their own requirements.
We have successfully played back DVDs recorded by:

DVD-Rs copied from Boom Recorder.
CDs copied from FR2 media.
DVD-Rs copied from Sound Devices 744T and 702T media.
DVD-Rs copied from Nagra V media.
DVD-Rs copied from ProTools.
DVD-Rs copied from HHB Porta-Drive media.
Fostex PD-6: UDF DVD-RAM disk
Please avoid using either 4 + 2 or 5 + 1, editorial will often ask for
tracks from each file.
If you must use, please specify if you are using regular 6-track, or a
4
iso + 2-track mix layout
Non-Mirroring Recording Systems:
Including the Sound Devices 744T, 702T, Nagra V, Metacorder, etc.
We CANNOT play DVD-RAM formatted with ANY MAC OS Format, Please use
DVD-R or CD-R when using a MAC to burn disk.
Often, material from these recorders is prepared for delivery using a
laptop computer. The material may be transferred to an external
firewire
or USB hard drive, but for us, the best way to deliver this material
is
burned to DVD-R or CD-R. When burned properly, these discs are
playable
directly on the DV40 for transfer. Material delivered on hard drive,
flash memory, or improperly burned discs must be prepared properly
before it can be transferred. Please warn us if you intend to deliver
"NON PLAYABLE MEDIA"
Metacorder's built-in burning functionality works great, no Toast
required.
Portable, standalone disc burners like the Roadstor, often produce
problematic discs for DV40 playback. If you do need to use one of
these
devices, please check with us first to see if your setup will work.
Recommended Burning Applications And Settings:
Toast for Macintosh -
Choose the DATA tab, and the Advanced button in the settings drawer to
the side
For DVD-R, choose the DVD-ROM (UDF) setting.
For CD-R, choose the Mac & PC setting.>From the Recorder Menu, select Recorder Settings. Make sure that you
select Write Disc under the Advanced tab. It's also a good idea to
have
Verify Data selected as well.
Macintosh - Burning Discs in the Finder
You can burn CD-R discs in the Finder if you do not have Toast. DVD-R
discs burned in the finder will not work in the DV40.
Easy CD/Media Creator for Windows (tested with Ver 7)
Set your software to burn DVD-R discs in UDF 1.02 format.
CD-R's must be burned with an ISO 9660 bridge (usually Joliet Bridge
is
fine, because Roxio usually includes the ISO bridge with the Joliet
bridge).
Not Recommended: Nero (for PC) and Dragon Burn (for Mac). Both these
software packages have caused delivery problems in the past. UDF
compatibility issues and non-standard disc burns are the most frequent
problems.
PLEASE WARN US IF YOU INTEND NOT TO DELIVER AUDIO FILES OR FORMATS NOT
PLAYABLE DIRECTLY ON THE DV40.
PLEASE WARN US IF YOU INTEND NOT TO DELIVER A PAPER SOUND REPORT.
RECORDER SETTINGS
The Audio Post house may have their own requirements.
There are MANY settings and configurations for these machines.
If wild tracks are recorded please note approximate beginning
timecode(s) on sound reports.
Our DV40s are Ver 9-81 (we have earlier versions for DEVA II), they
will playback DVD-RAM formatted UDF 1.5 or FAT-16, FAT-32 BWF or DVD-R
formatted UDF 1.5 or ISO 9660 or CD-ROM formatted per ISO 9660
polyphonic files with 1 - 8 channels ( we can ONLY play the first
six ),
and SDII polyphonic files with up to 1,2 or 4 channels. If multiple
files (per take) are provided it will only play one at a time.
We CANNOT play DVD-RAM formatted with ANY MAC OS Format, Please use
DVD-R or CD-R when using a MAC to burn disk.
On FAT 32 Media, file names are truncated to first 6 or 7 characters
in
DV40 display.
For separate audio recorded with 24.0000 FPS Film we have used:
30 FPS NDF time code
48.000 KHz sample rate (48.048 will work also)
24 or 16 Bit word
BWF or SDII file format
For separate audio recorded with 23.98 FPS Hi Def Video we have used:
29.97 FPS NDF time code DEVA IV & V PLEASE use at least Ver 2.27 per
Howard at Zaxcom, March 16, 2006.
48.000 KHz sample rate.
24 or 16 Bit word
BWF or SDII file format
Most "Non Linear" recorders have some sort of "Pre Record Buffer" if a
new recording is begun IMMEDIATELY after a stop there may be a
timecode
overlap. This will prevent the DV40 from showing the one of the takes
in
it's "LIST PLAY" mode. If you start recording quickly after a stop
please note "possible TC overlap" on sound report and or voice slate.
For DEVA IV and V and Sound Devices 744T and 702T:
The F setting stamps 48048 sound files as though they were recorded at
48000. This may require special sync connection. Please do not use.
All These machines are in constant development.
I will be glad to speak to Production Sound Mixers on these issues,
hopefully before we transfer.
AT THE BEGINNING OF EACH SHOOT, AND ON YOUR TEST DISK when you record
your reference tone and id, please include a voice recital of about 20
seconds of time code numbers from the record machine readout beginning
with "Hr" "Min" then "Seconds" only as they appear in the record
machine
readout on channel 1.
For UNUSUAL SITUATIONS, please provide the below on test disk only,
we
will have discussed by phone.
A useful preproduction sound test would be time code from the output
of
the recorder recorded on channel 2 of a polyphonic file with a voice
recital of the first 20 seconds of time code numbers from the record
machine readout on channel 1, then jam a smart slate once and record
its
time code on channel 1 in addition to the record machine-out time code
on channel 2 This test recording should last about 10 to 20 Min. If
your
Smart Slate does not have a TC output, then jam some other generator,
or
just do not make this part of the test. Using the slate out allows us
to
check for drift between your Record machine and Slate for as long as
you
make the test.
Other slates or "lockit" boxes may be jammed and recorded on other
channels.
