This looks interesting. Reasonably priced too although made in Germany
;-)). Are there any other handhelds? Smaller maybe?

That depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for just a
spectrum analyzer to find an open radio channel, I think the ones built in
to the Lectros and other Wireless mics are the best to fill that function.

If you are looking for a hand-held programmable scanner to use as a
monitoring device as well as spectrum analyzer the Icom IC-R3 is a good
choice.

Is scans most frequencies AM FM WFM Air, & TV and up to the 2.4 Ghz
range. It is small and can be programmed from a computer with special
software and a data cable. Has many memory pre-sets (Hundreds) and can tune
everything that may be transmitting on the set (except cell phones).
Monitor remote video, your wireless, walkie talkies, steadycam transmitter,
Comteks, almost anything. Clips on your belt and also has video/audio out
for feeding that football game to the video assist monitors when the video
guy forgot to bring a tuner.

It also has a crude spectrum analyzer and autoscan modes to scan any of its
many bands. I will say that the learning curve on the user interface is
steep. There are a lot of modes and tricky ways to get to them. The color
screen is nice and the menus are easy to read, but with only 3 buttons and a
knob to access all the possibilities and modes it gets quite confusing to
remember which combination of which button with the knob does what. It
sells for around $350 US. You can find them cheaper or used.
