When they do the pull down to get it in the avid, won't the lips be out of
sync?

You only pull it down in the AVID if you HAVEN'T pulled it up for playback.
The pull down for the avid would allow the original track to be slowed down
to match the pulled down film from telecine to match back to your track that
you played (un modified - No pull up) on the set.

Hope that hasn't gotten too confusing.
