Re: DVD Burner questions

I have been able to format and burn DVD-RAM's using OSX. However, it
is not an ideal scenario.

Upon insertion of a DVD-RAM into my LG ext. Multi-Drive, OSX will
imediately ask me if I want to initialize the disc. If I say yes, the
disc will be formatted using Disc Utilities. I will then be able to
read and write to the disc as if it were a hard drive. However, the
disc will be formatted as HFS+, so it will not be DV-40 et al
compatible.

I am also able to format in UDF, FAT 32, ISO 9660, etc. using Dragon
Burn. However, after doing so, the formatted disc will not show up in
finder, or the Desktop. The disc WILL still show up in Dragon Burn
where I can then do an "all at once" burn of my Data in exactly the
same fashion that one would burn a DVD-R. Once burned this disc IS
readable by OSX and will show up in finder and the desktop. Of course
there is absolutely no point to doing this as I would now still have to
burn all at once and the DVD-RAM's are even slower to burn in this
fashion than DVD-R's.

Best,
Darren Brisker

OS X does not have any problems with DVD-RAM

I've never gotten OS X to cooperate with DVD-RAM. I can always READ a
previously written DVD-RAM disc on a properly equipped drive, but I
have not been able to format an unformatted DVD-RAM blank on OS X
successfully. I have also attempted to write to a pre-formatted
DVD-RAM blank with Toast, DragonBurn, and Apple Disk Utility, but in
all cases the software crashed in the middle of the burn process. I
posted these experiences last year and every so often (such as earlier
in this thread) I put a call out there to see if anyone has
successfully done it. In multiple queries over the last year or so, I
still have not got a confirmed answer from anyone yet saying, "I used
this optical drive, this version of OS X, and this program, and I was
able to format and write to DVD-RAM blanks without problem."

I am hoping that day will come since because of this inability to write
to -RAM, I currently have to use DVD-R as a carrier pigeon to the edit
room and i would like to take DVD-R out of my workflow. (I do submit an
HDD at the end of the show as well with all of the files, but it's too
troublesome to have it going back and forth every day on some shows).
I have been considering going "dual system" and buying a PC laptop to
go with my Macs, so I can get around some of these issues, but a better
answer would be to find a way to do it all on the Mac.

I suppose it would also be interesting to know if it is possible to
write to DVD-RAM successfully via Windows on an Intel Mac and an
external DVD-RAM drive such as the LG.
