I am not completely sure about this, but don't the major sound editorial
DAW's provide most of these file management, logging, naming and
categorizing functions since that is one of the major tasks of any
editorial process?
I don't think many of the complete editorial DAWs pull all the metadata
directly from a BWF file without 3rd party plug-ins or special utilities
that sometimes can cost as much as the DAW itself.. (proTools DV Toolkit,
Titan, Loco, etc) Certain tasks like logging and file management,
(searching for and copying files for archiving etc) are done by assistant
editors, and the need to tie up a $6000 pro-tools workstation to do these
simple but necessary tasks can be alleviated by using a $99 piece of
software that can accomplish the same thing on any lcheap intel laptop
without any extraneous hardware needing to be attached. Just to audition
and log the time code in the files most of the DAW software requires you to
open the file (load it into the edit window or Timeline) before you can play
it with time code display.
True, but the tools they are using now for transcription involve propriataryIt also has tools for like
foot-pedal controlled playback with automatic time code logging for
Transcriptionists to use. So you can see it has a lot of things that you
personally may not use during production but are still valuable in post.
Only valuable in post if they are lacking the tools to accomplish these
tasks
software and custom outboard hardware to decode the LTC on an audio track,
(usually playing back on a special Cassette deck or Dat machine) convert it
to ASCII text and send it over a serial port. These tools require a custom
setup and are not cheap. BWF-Widget pro can replace all the hardware and
allow TC logging and transcription of multitrack audio files on any windows
PC or laptop. No extra hardware or propriatary software required.
Transcription work can now be farmed out to people working at home with
their own personal PCs with access to an FTP site over the internet.
.. Also, BWF-Widget Pro may have limited appeal or usefullness to
the major sound editorial systems in use because the dominate DAW isPro-Tools and AVID Media Composer also work on Windows machines right now.
ProTools running on the Mac (and it is highly unlikely that these
systems will upgrade to Intel equipped Macs with Boot Camp just to be
able to run your software because Digidesign has not yet even announced
when Universal Binaries will be available).
No need to wait for "Universal Binaries" Most of the newer AVIDS are all on
XP based systems. (although they did announce at NAB that they would
continue to support the MAC OSX versions)
Being able to generate a useful sound report from metadata seems to be
something that is quite attractive to many and I believe that none of
the stand alone recorders provide this except for the Cantar by using
Majax. But even with Majax and the Cantar, or with your software and
other recorders, the files still need to be copied to a host computer.
This is where Metacorder and BoomRecorder have an advantage.
No, the files don't need to be copied to the host computer. I can hook may
laptop up to my 744T or to an HHB Porta-Drive or to a DEVA. or Cantar Via
Firewire or USB-2 and use BWF Widget Pro to access all the files on their
Hard drives (or CF cards on the FR2 and HD-P2, or SD702t) (or DVD-RAM on
the DEVA or Fostex PD6) to build the database file and generate a sound
report. It can do this in a few seconds without the need to copy any files
to the laptop. In fact I usually save the resulting data file or PDF sound
report directly on the disks in the machines so when the contents of each
daily folder are copied to other media to turn in or archive, the neat sound
reports and data files go right along with the sound in each folder. These
data files can be loaded and printed by any database program on any
operating system. Even on a Mac... I can even audition or play the files
with Time code display directly from the Hard Drives or DVD-RAM disks in the
Recorders without having to copy them into the laptop.
